3-O-Ethyl-L-ascorbic acid is a stable, lipophilic derivative of vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) widely used in advanced skincare formulations. In this compound, an ethyl group is introduced at the 3-position hydroxyl group, which significantly enhances its chemical stability and lipid solubility compared to pure ascorbic acid, while preserving its potent biological activity. It functions as a highly effective antioxidant, scavenging reactive oxygen species and protecting skin from photoaging and environmental damage. More importantly, it is readily bioconverted to active L-ascorbic acid within the skin, where it stimulates collagen synthesis, inhibits melanin production, and promotes epidermal renewal. Its superior stability against oxidation, excellent skin penetration, and non-irritating nature make it a preferred vitamin C derivative in anti-aging, brightening, and photoprotective products, typically used at concentrations of 1% to 10%.
